We’ve been previewing the Gas Monkey Garagecollection for a couple of weeks, and now it’s time to let the cat out of the bag. BaT is proud to announce that the full collection will be going live next week! Richard Rawlings (@Gas_Monkey) is doing something we’ve never seen before in a BaT collection sale, and it’s sure to generate excitement: all 29 auctions will begin on September 7, and all will close, one right after another, on September 14. We are looking forward to the fireworks, especially since every vehicle in the collection is also being offered at no reserve!
The collection itself is quite eclectic, with vehicles ranging from prewar to present day, from unrestored survivors to wild custom builds.
Richard’s affinity for hot rods and kustoms is well known, and his personal examples do not disappoint. The crown jewel is the famous “King T” roadster built by Don Tognotti and Gene Winfield, which was voted “Most Beautiful Roadster” at the 1964 Oakland Roadster Show. The car was refurbished in 2007 with assistance from Winfield himself, who refinished the body in its original shade of Wild Pearl Lavender. The car is offered with period photos as well as a collection of scale toys and models.
Also on offer are a gold-flake 1932 Ford five-window coupe featuring a steel body, a boxed So-Cal Speed Shop frame, a Chevy 350 with dual Weber carbs and dump tubes, and white pearl upholstery. On the stealthier end of things is a 302-powered Ford Shoebox with power steering, brakes, and windows in addition to retrofitted A/C.
Next up is this 1965 Ford Mustang fastback, a K-code car that was refurbished and modified in 2018 by Thoroughbred Restorations of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Details of the build include a 289ci V8 featuring an Inglese 8-Stack electronic fuel injection system, a Tremec five-speed manual transmission, tubular front control arms, Ridetech coilovers, and Wilwood front disc brakes.
Two more Mustangs are also included in the collection: a 1965 hardtop powered by a 289ci V8 backed by a four-speed gearbox, and a 1968 convertible finished in Lime Gold over Parchment vinyl, which is said to have remained with its original owner until 2021.
Next up is a pair of Harley-based choppers; the first was built in the late 1960s by Denver’s Choppers of San Bernardino, California, and was refurbished by Brian Henke in 2017. The second motorcycle was built in the early 1990s by Kennedy’s Custom Cycle for Easyriders founder Keith “Bandit” Ball.
Though the collection is heavy on American iron, foreign manufacturers are also represented. This Porsche 928 is finished in Cashmere Beige over a brown Pasha interior and shows 62k miles. Also on offer isa handsome 12k-mile Jaguar XJ12L Series II sedan.
The first of two C1 Corvettes is a 1959 model that remained with its previous owner for 50 years prior to Richard’s acquisition and is powered by a replacement Chevy 350ci small-block V8. The second example is from the 1962 model year and wears red paint with polished Cragar wheels.Also offered is a Roadster Shop Stage III C1 chassis, which features Penske coilovers, C6 Corvette spindles and hubs, right-hand drive, and a Strange Engineering Ford 9″ rear end.
Now let’s talk trucks. The Gas Monkey Garage shop truck is a 1987 Chevrolet R30 outfitted with a utility bed, 20″ steel wheels, lowered suspension, air conditioning, and custom upholstery.
The R30’s taller descendant is this customized Chevy Silverado 2500 extended-cab monster truck, lifted high on King remote-reservoir shocks, trussed axles, and 21/49″ Super Swampers.
Rounding out the truck collection on the Ford end are a heavily-patinated 1957 F-100 short bed, a 1978 F-250 XLT Ranger SuperCab, and a 2022 Bronco V6 with the Badlands package.
This Kurtis-style midget racer was built by Picks Racing Engines of Santa Ana, California, and was campaigned in Western Racing Association events.
Odd man out is this 1986 Zimmer Quicksilver, a low-production GT featuring a stretched Pontiac Fiero chassis with special fiberglass bodywork and shaped chrome bumpers.
Refurbished and preserved prewar Fords include a pair of Model A Tudor sedans, a 1936 Model 68 Deluxe roadster, and a 1937 Model 78 Business Coupe.
The Gas Monkey crew is even offering an exclusive experience – a day-long, four-person tour of their Texas shop, including lunch with Richard, complimentary Miller Lite, and lots of fun. Proceeds benefit the Gas Monkey Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit that has worked with The Gary Sinise Foundation, No Child Left Behind, American Warrior Garage, Make-A-Wish Foundation, and other organizations.
